What is Trichology?

Trichology is the science of the hair and scalp. A person who is trained in this area is called a Trichologist. What problems do Trichologists deal with? Tricholigists deal with problems of the hair itself, and with scalp conditions.

Hair loss, whether it be a diffuse or all over loss, or more specific localised loss, can be caused by a number of factors from genetics, stress, fungi or any other acquired form. Hair loss can appear suddenly, or it can gradually manifest itself over the years.

Sometimes, it can just take a new hair style, and suddenly you can 'see through' your hair, generally indicating the loss has been progressing for some time. Hair is a very sensitive 'barometer' to imbalances in the body - factors such as poor nutrition, medical or genetic problems, medication and stress can adversely affect their hair and scalp.

Trichologists also deal with scalp problems such as Psoriasis, Seborrheic Dermatitis, Pityriasis, and others. If you have a problem with your hair or scalp the specialist to see is a Trichologist in the same way you would see a dermatologist for a skin problem. They can treat hair loss, baldness, scaling of the scalp, itching, hair breakage, dryness and oiliness amongst other things.
